Lucky is a night shift.

The Mara

March 2024, Maasai Mara. A tiny bull is wandering with an adult elephant who can guard him — but cannot feed him. Milk is the whole game at that age.

The night

The big bull moves on. A pride of lions takes an interest. Rangers from Mara Elephant Project and Olare Motorogi Conservancy stay with the calf until morning.

The name

They fly him to Nairobi Nursery. The rangers ask that he be called Olomunyak: the lucky one. Two years on, he is still the charming glutton of the herd.

Ollie, to his keepers

As a tiny rescue he liked to suckle fingers for comfort. Infant elephants need to be touched every few seconds. He took that personally.

Herd medic

He play-wrestles with Taroha, browses with Mzinga, and sprints over if another orphan is upset. Lucky is a team sport.

Third birthday

He practiced for cake by blowing bubbles in the water. That is either science or a bit. We are going with bit.

The long game

One day he is supposed to be a big bull in the wild. Until then: milk, mud, mischief, and a ticker that fits in a roar.
